Halfway through the 19th century Blankenberge made the transition from a small fishing town to a vibrant seaside town. The railway line Bruges - Blankenberge stimulated the breakthrough of the city as a tourist resort in 1863. Villas, hotels and beautiful public buildings such as the casino, shot like mushrooms from the ground. However, all this had an influence on the lives of the fishermen. As a result Blankenberge has some beautiful belle époque houses with wonderful tiles that belong to the European world class. Despite the disappearance of the fishing business in Blankenberge around 1955, many testimonies of this maritime heritage have been preserved. The harbour quarter with its shelter and some replica vessels, the former water reservoir with its locks and 'lockmasters'-houses', the lighthouse and the port channel with the jetties form the unique maritime scenery of this guided walk.

During the First World War (1914-1918) occupied Blankenberge was faced a double role. On the one hand it's fishing harbour was turned into a modest war port with an airport; on the other hand the tourist resort served as a place of rest and relaxation for the German front soldiers. You can experience how Blankenberge experienced the occupation and listed to many stories during this walk

After the Great War, people started to look at architecture differently. Efficiency encouraged creative solutions. This resulted in new styles with new materials, including reinforced concrete and cimorné. There was an irresistible urge to revitalise the city, which was translated into art deco.
Choose between the east side (Hands on the sleeves) or the west side (West Side Stories) of the city and discover this unknown but surprising part of Blankenberge!

The focus may be on the historical or recent symbols, or on the mosses and lichens or the different types of stone, marble, glass marbrite and cast iron. Come and listen to the story of the cemetery, the flowers and their significance, the re-using of tombstones and the efforts of the public garden service to make this place an haven of peace.
